Red Gold Nectarine (Prunus persica ‘Red Gold’) is a very late-season yellow freestone nectarine from Rutgers University breeding, yielding large, firm, richly flavored fruit with 80–90% deep scarlet-red skin and complex acidic-sweet flesh rated among the best-tasting of its type. It grows in USDA hardiness zones 5-9 and AHS heat zones 4-9, needs 700-850 chill hours, and is self-fertile, fruiting reliably without a pollinator partner.

Redgold nectarine was developed by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station at Rutgers University and introduced in the 1960s as a very late-season yellow freestone option for Eastern growers. The variety’s breeding objective was combining vivid red blush coverage — 80 to 90 percent surface color — with the complex, acidic flavor profile that distinguishes premium quality nectarines from earlier, blander selections. Its harvest timing, approximately 24 days after Redhaven, positioned it at the far end of the Eastern nectarine calendar, allowing orchardists to extend their season well into August. Redgold filled a practical gap: earlier varieties with high color often sacrificed the tartness and intensity that home orchardists prize, while deeply flavored selections frequently lacked marketable color coverage. Its large, globose, firm-fleshed fruits were noted as excellent for canning and freezing in addition to fresh use. Detailed parentage records for the cross were not publicly released in standard horticultural literature.
