Nonpareil Almond (Prunus dulcis) Is the most popular commercial almond accounting for 40% of total annual production. The tree has an upright growing pattern reaching 15-20ft tall and 10-15ft wide. Nonpareil was developed in 1879 by A.T. Hatch in Solano County, California. It can grow in zone 6-9 and requires 400 chilling hours below 45F for proper growth. It is pollinated by honeybees and requires another almond variety (like Texas Mission or Halls Hardy) to produce. It produces a large flat nut with smooth light-colored skin in a thin, soft shell. The nut large 1.2 gram nut is 50% oil and 13% protein with a mild sweet flavor that make it a favorite. Harvest the nuts when they have matured and the outer fruit splits open. They should be easy to shake from the tree.
